Edinburgh, Scotland - Victoria Street and Royal Mile - August 2024

We absolutely loved Edinburgh. It was moody and beautiful, it was about the size of the Des Moines metro area, and so much history.v

Just a block off of the Royal Mile is Victoria Street. It's one of the prettiest streets in Edinburgh, and is the home of the cafe where JK Rowling wrote much of the early Harry Potter books. We largely went there because it's adorable:

People walk on a cobblestone street with colorful buildings. Signs read "Berties." Overcast sky and lively urban scene.
Due to the aforementioned Fringe Festival, there were about three times as many people as normal. We went to a n oddity museum, several shops, a few Harry Potter stores, and a great chocolate milk/ice cream restaurant.

Two people smiling on a colorful street with rainbow-painted buildings. Crowded sidewalk with parked cars. Overcast yet lively atmosphere.
All business!

Narrow close on the Royal Mile, view framed by stone walls leading to a gothic spire in the distance. Warm tones, rustic ambience.
Advocate's Close - One of the oldest closes off of the Royal Mile. It has one of the best views in Edinburgh, with the Scott Monument as the feature.

Gothic church spire with red window stands tall against a cloudy sky, surrounded by historic stone buildings, creating an old-world ambiance.
Another view of the Scott Monument - right off of the Royal Mile.

Gothic cathedral with a tall spire under a blue sky. Crowded street scene with a child on shoulders. Colorful flowers hang from a building.
ANOTHER view of the Scott Monument - I think this one was from up toward Edinburgh Castle.

Royal Mile with people walking and colorful buildings. A barrier with "no entry" signs blocks the road. Overcast sky above.
Technically you can still see my boy the Scott Memorial behind the building under construction there. This view is from the south part of the Royal Mile looking north, up toward Edinburgh Castle.

A man in traditional Scottish attire plays bagpipes on a cobblestone street. He wears a red tartan kilt, and stands against a stone wall.
Loved this street performer as part of the Fringe Festival. We also got some video.

Man leans on sandstone building at Cockburn Street, near The Woollen Mill entrance. Bright day, blue sky, and outdoor seating visible.

My name is Angie.  I find aesthetically "decent" and normal to be largely boring.  I am really lucky to get to spend time behind my camera doing all kinds of fun things, and also super-really annoying my kids by taking a million photos of them.
